MobMap v1.30 is out

Quite some time has passed since the last update to MobMap. After the Add-On and the corresponding backend systems have reached a state now that could almost be called "stable", I didn't want to completely break that fragile stability by releasing the next version too early.

This update does - again - change several things in the database format. This was necessary to incorporate a new type of data into MobMap: drop rates. For the start, MobMap contains drop rate data (if available) for all known quest items and for all recipe reagents.

This should make questing even more easier because now MobMap can answer the question "Who drops those 20 [xyz] I need for this quest?" - and of course you can have MobMap then display the location of the mobs dropping your quest items. The quest objective quicksearch buttons (also known as "questionmark" buttons) have been consequently enabled to search the quest objective for known item names besides checking it for known mob names.

So in terms of questing there's only one big thing left: items that aren't looted from dead mobs but picked up from stashes/chests/etc. This one is now pretty much on top of my to-do list, and since I already collect the necessary data together with the loot data, this functionality will probably find its way into the next bigger update.

And now, for the sake of completeness, the 1.30 patch notes (because there have been some more additions than just this new database...):

- added: display of skill level required for recipes
- added: possibility to sort recipes by skill level
- changed: item name helper database format changed to reduce memory usage by 15%
- added: several help text tooltips
- added: possibility to disable item detail data requests to the server (only recommended if you permanently get disconnected otherwise)
- added: New drop rate database! It currently contains drop rates for all items necessary for the quests known to MobMap and the drop rates for recipe reagents.
- added: quicksearch buttons for recipe reagents to quickly search for mobs dropping the reagent or merchants offering it
- added: the questionmark buttons next to quest objectives now also search the drop rate database if the quest objective is to collect an item obtainable by killing and looting mobs
- fixed: using the MobMap check box on the world map does not cause a lua error anymore if the MobMap position database has not been loaded yet

Very nice! I've been looking forward for this addition for some time. I think that this makes this one of the best addons the game has seen so far.

A couple miscellaneous requests, which I am sure that you are already working on:

Ability to sort quests by level or by giver on the quests tab: - This would be very helpful to help organize the quests.

Ability to filter quests that have already been completed: - probably significantly more difficult to do, but would be great.

Keep up the great work. I truly appreciate your hard work so far.

Hi, awesome mod you have here, it was exactly was I was looking for. One small thing tho, the updater says it can't connect and to check my connection, and yes I listed it as an exception to windows firewall and such. Any ideas?

First of all, let me compliment you on a fine addon for WoW. I've only been using this addon for about two days now and it has served it's intended and then some purpose! Great job! On another note however, some guild mates of mine are concerned that this program may contain a "key logger" within it's code. I assured them this is not the case. But, for the sake of clarification, I was wondering if you have a "faq" file developed for such questions/concerns. I believe, it would help to allay any concerns that others might have about this addon. Finally, again let me say, this addon is quite an addition to my arsenal of utilities that I have used in my WoW gaming experience. Thank you very much for your hard work and meticulous dedication!

Hi, and thank you for a wonderful add on!

I would like to remove the red boxes with question marks that seem to appear on my screen randomly though. Any ideas how to remove this?

    I think in MobMap.xml
    line 1510 should be:

    if(MobMap_HideAllMinimapDots) then
    MobMap_HideAllMinimapDots();
    end

Otherwise, there will be a error message if user click "minimap overlay" right after logon.

  7. Shengting says:

Whatever, I love this Addon most of all.
Really good job. Keep on it.

  8. Michael says:

Very good addon. My son gave it to me some days ago and I already love it. He plays WoW same as I do^^
    I also update your database.
What I do not see and I also beleve it is not in is position data in instances. I know Blizzard does not provide maps for insances but maybe there is a possibility to joint venture with Atlas addon?

Just an idea. Additionaly I agree that it would be great helpfull to see if the item drops from a Mob or is lootable from a chest or so.

Many thanks again for you really great tool. Please rank my comment as a suggestion only. I am not criticizing at all.

  9. Slarti says:

Actually the maps aren't the problem. Gathering position data of mobs in instances is impossible, because the lua functions used in the outside world to get the position of the player (getting the position of a target is also not possible, so the player position is all you have) do not return anything in instances. And without that data I don't have to worry about instance maps at all...

  10. Michael says:

Thanks for your fast answerer. That explains why nobody did something like this as an automatic tool. Wouldn't it then be a possible idea to display hat this item is found in the instance xyz from Mob xyc but without map data??

    This is my favourite mod.
I especially like the drop stats, comes in really handy for farming.
The only thing is that it doesnt have "mote of air" recorded in it's database, even though i've uploaded my data many times after looting them from creatures.
could you please add this to your list?
all the other motes are there.

  12. Slarti says:

You were right, the motes of air weren't included, although they should have been. I added them, so all databases built from now on include the motes of air too.

  13. Chris says:

Thanks for the quick response, much appreciated

  14. Mark says:

Really great Mod, i have been spreading the word. One problem though, When ever i click on the Quest Question Mark and it is an duel Faction quest, it always seems to show only the alliance quest not Horde, even with the Horde box Check "True" Any help with this would be great

  15. J. Graves says:

wow, really nice work. I can say this is right up there with Auctioneer and a Panel as the best addon of all time.

    Thank You

    J.

  16. Brian says:

it seems like it integrates itself w/ Mobinfo2 is that right? i have some mobs now that have over 600 loots,i do merge databases but didn't think i had near that many on some mobs

  17. Krystian says:

Hi, I checked your mod, and when looking for a specific mob it only shows where that mob can be encountered. As I'm play as feral tank, I'm often interested what kind of damage mobs inflict, as it often helps to have proper gear equipped in heroic instances. Would it be possible to gather and add this information to database? The information if the mob is stunnable/resistant to taunts/shackles/sheep etc might also help a lot.
