MobMapUpdater stability

The MobMapUpdater has been consistently crashing for a few people when they tried to upload their collected data. The latest WoW patch "fixed" the problem by emptying one of the WoW cache files, which - as one of these guys helped me to find out (thank you very much!) - apparently crashed the updater program while it was trying to read the file. However, as that is not a real fix, the new MobMapUpdater version 1.71 I just released should fix this problem at the source.

You'll get it automatically as soon as you run the updater the next time.

For some reason, all the mob marker dots, are WAY off. They're not anywhere close to where they should be. I had a quest that the mob was in top left corner of Barrens, yet Mobmap, showed me the location in Durotar. What causes this?

Mine still says it's version 1.58. Also, the manual download links will let you download 1.58.

Where can I get the 1.71 version you mentioned on Sunday?

  8. the cody says:

I had a suggestion (this seemed the appropriate place) for MobMap: in the quest view, on the rewards items, *pressing shift should show the item currently equipped to that spot*, like it does in the inventory window. This way I can search through the quests, without needing it in the quest log. I'm guessing that's part of the Blizzard API, but I don't know if it's easily implemented; hopefully, this is a really easy addition.

THIS ADD ON Works well on Mac

  14. gsnerf says:

Hi there, nice AddOn and nice to see there are regular updates, and even the MobMapUpdater is pretty neat.

As there are many people running WoW on a Mac: is there hope for us to see a Mac version of the updater? Or a java port (would work on windows, mac and even for the small number of linux users playing WoW)?

Apart from that: great work, keep it up!

  15. Joey says:

I love this add on, and use it all the time!

I do have a question, however. Not sure if this is the right place for it, but I can't seem to find anywhere else to post it! After I look for a mob, I would like to get rid of the dots from the map. Is there a way, besides clearing out the field and selecting Polly (the first mob that shows up *smile*) to remove the dots, once I find the location of the mob?

Other than that, I have had no issues, and love this add on! (Did I say that already? *smile*)

  16. humfras says:

There is a small text on the world map in the lower left corner with a tickmark and a text ('...Momap...' - I don't know the english text because I play on german client).

Uncheck it and the dots should disappear.

Let me add my vote for a Mac or Java version of the updater.

On another note, I have a question about installation. I downloaded and installed the addon, which of course lives in a folder called /Addons/Mobmap. Then I downloaded the database, and its folder is also called "Mobmap". Can't have two folders in the same place with the same name, so I took all the files in that folder and dumped them in with the addon stuff in the existing Mobmap folder. That works, but is it the right way to do it? In particular, I run into a problem trying to set up WUU to update the db per the instructions at . It seems to expect the database to be in a folder called "MobmapDatabase".

  18. Ed Reppert says:

Hm. seems to have left off the url I included. it's http://wuu.vagabonds.info/wuuki/OtherSites_Text_Versions

Hey i have a problem when i start mobmap WOW cut my Internetconnetion many people have this problem PLS FIX IT

  20. loptr says:

firstly, i appreciate the hard work you do for the app and for the mod. thanks very much for it, it's great!

unfortunately the updater still crashes every single time i try to upload my data. connection probs, firewall settings (i.e. all system stuff) have been tested several times, so it seems it is still the updater-app itself that has got a problem. this is of course no accuse, but i thought you might kind of wanna know that it is still not running satble...

    keep up your great work!

  21. loptr says:

PS: or might it be that the app takes way too long to upload (meaning more than 5-10 minutes)?

  22. Slarti says:

Yeah, actually it might be the case - though this does depend largely on your internet connection speed (that is, upstream speed) and the amount of data you've collected. If you upload rather often, the upload process shouldn't take more than a few seconds. But if you haven't uploaded for a long time, the amount of data has grown and might take up to several minutes to be submitted if your internet connection bandwidth is limited.

You could find that out yourself if you'd use some sort of traffic monitor program to monitor your upstream traffic to see if there's data flowing while you try to upload. There's even a rudimentary version of such a tool in the windows task manager (Windows XP and up).

But I'll take this as a suggestion to make the upload process more interactive (i.e. create another thread just for the upload stuff, so an upload doesn't block the user interface of the updater completely anymore) and to finally implement proper compression for the uploads which should further reduce their size.

  23. loptr says:

thanks for the quick reply. in fact, i forgot to upload my data for quite some time (a couple of weeks at least). i'll take your suggestion and have a look at my netMon.

thanks again for your great work. keep it up!

Hi! I built myself a new UI recently using only Ace addons (and MobMap) and I was wondering whether you considered Ace'ing MobMap. There are lots of advantages in having an Ace'd UI like easier updating, reuse of libraries, centralized configuration, etc. I can also imagine it would be an awful lot of work to rewrite the addon, but I'd like to know if you ever considered the possibility. Also you could just Ace the database from time to time and provide it as a library for other people to use. I am certain a lot of people would appreciate it. Thanks

  25. Kindara says:

    Take a look at
    http://mobmap.de/devblog/archives/15-Some-final-words-concerning-Ace2.html

  26. 1001101 says:

I'll post it here because I don't seem to be able to post in that thread:

Those are, of course, some good points. But consider this: I like having a reliable quest database, the search capability, etc. of your addon. But I also would like the nice map and quest tracker of Carbonite Quest (http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info8214-CarboniteQuest.html). Both addons must maintain quite a large database and it could really slow things down for me. Now if there was a library providing the database, both addons could use that instead.
I don't want to sound rude but the fact is that adapting Ace2 as a library based approach maybe wouldn't benefit you, but it would certainly benefit others (like in this case users and developers of quest DB based addons).
Of course, I never coded anything for Ace2 so I can't know how limiting it is for the developer, but wouldn't it be possible to just separate the code into libraries and provide an Ace2 compatible interface for them? That way the addon would be almost the same, but other people could use the great work you've done as well.

  27. Slarti says:

Libraries have NOTHING to do with Ace2, except that Ace2 claims to be a set of libraries itself, of course. Ace2 hasn't invented that idea, and you don't have to use Ace2 if you want to provide functionality that other people could use in their addons.

Actually MobMap already has a very library-like approach (it just doesn't explicitly call it "libraries"): there's an internal API that's being used by the user interface components to access the database. This API gets loaded in parts whenever a database is being loaded, and since there isn't any isolation between different addons in WoW, any addon could possibly use that API to access the information from the MobMap database, just like the MobMap UI does. I'd definitely encourage this if an addon developer wants to request some data from the MobMap database in another addon. They just have to do it - but of course, that's not only a technical, but also a political question: maintaining an own database does not only open up way more possibilities from a technical viewpoint, but it also makes you a lot more independent from other developers, for example.

  28. WBrownlee says:

I haven't had this exact issue, but I am having trouble with things not showing up on the map. I do a search for a mob, the map comes up, but there's nothing shown on it. I use Metamap as well as Cartographer. It was working fine when I first got the addon (it's my very favorite, btw), but isn't working now. I have the sad face.

    Any help?

  29. Slarti says:

I've heard this several times now, though I've never been able to reproduce this problem so I have also been unable to solve it. The earlier reports indicated that it was caused by Cartographer, but I've tried several different versions of Cartographer here without success in reproducing the error. I will give Metamap a shot.

Can you remember anything about changes in your addon configuration the day Mobmap stopped working? Did you update any addons? Installed any new ones? Even those that don't seem to affect the world map could be the cause: since the WoW Lua environment doesn't have any isolation measures in place to separate addons in memory, any addon could possibly influence any other addon.

  30. Kindara says:

BTW, talking about Ace2 - here's some explanation about Ace3 which kind of explaines (in an indirect way) what Ace2 was supposed to be and what in reality it became:

  31. Minotaur says:

Since turning on the automatic mode in MobMap, I have experienced a problem attempting to do a shutdown/restart of Windows XP SP2 (Media Center Edition). I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. When I attempt to shutdown or restart, nothing happens. Once I terminate MobMap from the system tray, I can then attempt to shutdown/restart again and it behaves normally.

  32. Cerrath says:

Quick question, since this seems to be the place to ask. Is there a reason why patterns like "Pattern: Robe of Winter Night" cannot be found in Mobmap? I looked it up on Thottbot, farmed it, and then uploaded my data. But even updates later mobmap still doesn't find it. I've had a few other cases of this, but this is the most memorable because it was such a long farm, then I got two drop at the same time, and being bop I had to vendor the second. =(
