MobMap v3.20

MobMap v3.20 just went live! This is probably the patch with the most changelog entries in the history of this addon, and even though most of them are rather minor bug fixes and improvements of already-known features, there are some goodies in the bag :)

I have probably spent most time on the quest tracker, which has - after a bit of a rough start - become one of the most beloved features MobMap has to offer. But there is always room for improvements, even if it sometimes takes time (and listening to your users) to find that room.

In v3.20, the quest tracker has first of all undergone some minor enhancements, such as the type of a quest now being indicated in the quest title, or the number of other players (and their names in the tooltip) being shown in the tracker, just like in the Blizzard quest log, and some more minor tweaks. But there have also been major feature additions, one of them being a new "intelligent sorting" mechanism which always attempts to sort the quests in the quest log such that quests with objectives near your current position are at the top, while those for which you first have to travel a while are listed at the bottom. The objectives of quests are internally sorted the same way, of course, always showing you the nearest one first.

The other big change also related to the quest tracker is a new distance calculation method - well, I probably have to explain that one a little bit further. The position of a quest target (which is used for the distance display in the tracker, the new sorting, and shown as waypoint when you click on the question mark next to an objective) has been based on a precalculated position, calculated and stored in the MobMap database while it is created on the server. That works well for single targets at a fixed position, but not so well for targets which are spread out over a large area, like a bunch of mobs populating a whole valley. In such cases, the position has been assumed to be the center of the area, that is the center of all dots on the map, which is of course close, but not really correct (and sometimes even plain wrong, if there's a "hole" in the middle of the area where there are no mobs of a specific type). Especially in such cases, the new dynamic distance/position calculation is a big improvement: it uses the position data stored in MobMap - the same data that generates the dots on the map when you click on the question mark - to find the position on the border of such an area that is closest to your current position, and uses that for distance calculation and waypoint display. Since this calculated target position is updated as you walk, you'll always see the quickest path directly to your target area, not the quickest path to the middle of that area in hope that the stuff you're searching is even there.

Both of these new "features", the sorting by distance and dynamic distance calculation, can of course be deactivated - if you really want to :o) I have found them to be very useful when questing, as they provide you with even better and more accurate information about quest target locations and distances, while still leaving you the choice of what to do next.

But hey, I said "most changelog entries", so there's way more than these two bullet points I've just presented - for the rest, I encourage you to take a look at the full changelog for v3.20 following right after this paragraph. One thing left to say before though: if you encounter any new bugs in 3.20, please leave me a message here in the comments with detailed description and a stack trace, if possible! I'd like this version to be stable and reality-tested before I ready it for the upcoming WoW Patch 3.1.

----------------------------------------------------------

- changed: DATABASE FORMAT CHANGE! You will need to get an updated database copy!
- fixed: Token costs are now correctly displayed in the merchant tab
- fixed: The 'Suppress World Map' option setting of the MobMap quest tracker is now saved correctly between sessions
- added: The names of group members which are on a specific quest are now listed in the quest tracker quest tooltips, as well as the total number of group members on a quest which is shown directly in the quest title
- added: The type of a quest is now indicated by a letter in the quest title next to the quest level ("r"=Raid, "g"=Group, "d"=Daily, "p"=PvP)
- added: Shift-clicking a quest in the quest tracker now links the quest in chat
- fixed: Quests with all objectives completed are now correctly colored in the quest tracker
- changed: The color of completed quests in the tracker has been changed from light green to blue to make finished quests more distinguishable from quests below your level
- added: Quest tracker does now also show distance/position of objects where quests can be turned in
- added: Dynamic quest tracker distance calculation if mobs/items/... are spread out over a large area - distance is based on shortest path to the area now instead of a fixed position in the middle of the area. Automatically created TomTom waypoints are also being updated so that they always show the shortest path to the target area.
- added: Intelligent sorting of quest targets by distance has been added (can be disabled in the quest tracker options if you don't want the feature)
- fixed: World Map dots created from coords in quest comments are now displayed on the minimap, too
- fixed: When displaying dots in multiple zones at once, these dots are now displayed on the minimap as well
- changed: The minimap handling has been improved. This lowers the resource consumption and allows the minimap dots to extend to the full minimap size (instead of being displayed only on a part of the minimap around the center)
- added: Configurable background color for the quest tracker

no worries on your part fugus, it had stopped working before i tried your suggestion. i am using XP as well.

its about time to go over my machine for cookies and whatnot, so after i "clean house" i'll give it another go.

FYI could not remove the file bzip2.dll from the updater. Threw up an access denied error.

  10. snow says:

hello. i had the same problem as kaz, after following your advise and using the self updat feature, mobmap will not open.

i have used the updater, i've deleted and re-installed the entire package, even tried downloading seperately and it still will not open.

i have always used the built in updater for this add, as well as sending in comments and uploads. thank you for a great add-on!

  11. Skumboni says:

I had this problem after 2 attempts and no install I selected ignore the install. when the mobmap updater opened I was able to get the new version from there.

    Hi,

argh - i have the same thing like snow - followed the (bad?) advice of fugus and now the updater doesnt start anymore - help :-(
    running on win xp sp3
before i had the same pop up like kaz "there is a newer version of mobmap-updater - ignore - update" tried update and nothing happens, tried ignore and it doesn`t show any newer version.. but every time when i started that pop-up..?
    confused

and by the way - great addon, keep goin lad :-)

  17. Fugus says:

Sorry my advise hasn't helped you any. I have 2 computers at my house (Both running windows XP) and it worked on both of them. It might only work under windows XP.

    Sorry I couldn't help.

  18. snow says:

Just an update, i did some "house cleaning" ran my anti-spyware/ cookie software, (lavasoft ad-aware, spyware blaster) removed mobmap, and did a quick defrag of my main hdd.

did a fresh full package install, updated, and downloaded the database. Success!

haven't logged into wow as of yet, but mobmap now opens and functions normally. :)

  19. David says:

don`t mind that it didn`t work for me, as it seems i have to try to re-install it completely like snow did..
can anyone tell me which parts to keep for the settings? honestly i don`t remember how many settings i had to do because last full install is quite some time ago :-)

thank you for your replys guys :-)

  20. David says:

wow - today it worked without changing anything from my side :-))
maybe it was caused by the restart of the os? anyway - i'm done with it without new installation :-)

  23. Milan says:

    Hi!
I love Mobmap and new Quest tracker, but have one problem. It doesn't refresh automaticaly when I pickup quest item or kill quest mobs, it says 0/10 for example. Only when close it and open it again it refresh data 1/10 for example. Is it just me or is it for everyone. Tnx for help in advance and keep up the good work!

  24. accel says:

A minor wish from a satisfied user:

Could you please alter the font used by the quest tracker to coincide with that used by the built-in quest tracker? I am using tekticles and the font in the MobMap's quest tracker is the only one I can not control, unless I am missing something.

    Thanks for the great add-in!

  25. accel says:

You know... I have taken a look at the code for both MobMap and tekticles and it looks like the only good way to combine the two would be for MobMap to override the default fonts used by its UI elements with those used by system objects, whose fonts are being overridden by tekticles. Eg, if the normal font of a particular UI element in MobMap is set to "GameFontNormalSmall", the code would override it with the font used by the "SystemFont_Small" object (see the source code for tekticles), etc.

If there exists a system font object corresponding to the "GameFontNormalSmall" font, it would perhaps be simpler to just modify that object (does such an object exist? I can't load WoW at the moment). In that case, it would be better to change the code for tekticles.

I believe allowing MobMap using custom fonts is a worthy task. I can live with the default fonts, but Calibri (a system font in Vista, my personal choice) is so much clearer!

    Keep up the good work.

  26. Zetten says:

Firstly, I have to say excellent work on this mod - it's definitely one of the most necessary for my game, and one of the first I install.

Secondly, I have a small request/suggestion for a feature. I would love it if the mob tooltip feature was expanded to include drop information.

At the moment it tells you if the mob is a direct objective of a quest:
    " - /"

I think it would be great if it could also tell you the drop rate of quest items, such as:
    "Drops for : (/)"

Obviously this would only show up for quests you currently have, like the current tooltip does.

    Keep up the great work!

  27. Zetten says:

Correction to the above: I used angle brackets to write dynamic information, here is how the lines should read:

    "quest - killed/required"

    and

"Drops item for quest: droprate (have/required)"

  28. Sandistia says:

Love the addon, use it all the time. Quest tracker's looking good, like the addition of seeing who in your party has quests, but would still like to see the tracker show progress of party members the way quest helper does. If you could implement that, I'd completely remove questhelper.

  29. TripleEYE says:

First of all let me just say this is one of my 3 favorite adons (of which I can never decide which is better haha). Your eforts on developing and maintaining it are exraodrinary! :D
And for that we all love ya' ^_^

I'm so pleased about the quest tracker additions (especially the suspend fix, and the background color). However, I would like to request a new Quest Tracker option.
A simple one really: All I want is for the FONT size to be scalable (up to a very large scale).
You see I have a big screen for my computer. 32inch. I use it as a TV-Streaming tool and so I get to play wow on this screen as well.
    A few addons help me sort out the size of everything on the ingame UI, but it would be so much easier (and less iter-addon-conflicting) if I could scale up not only the mobMapQuestTracker window - but also the font itself ^_^;

I hope this is not too big of a request. It's been my observation that you can handle much bigger issues hehe

So please, and thank you (even if just for reading this).

  30. TripleEYE says:

oh umm.. sorry for my spelling - can't seem to be able to edit the comment :p

  31. Gian says:

Have to start and say THANKS!
This addon is one of my favorites and became even better with the awesome quest tracker.

I have to agree with TripleEYE though. To be able to change the font size would be a nice feature.

It would also be helpful to untrack quest that you know you won't need atm.

  32. MoonLite says:

Is there an official place to put bugreports and feature requests?

There's one feature I've been hoping for a long time:
Find nearest obj (obj being: mailbox/vendor/repairvendor/vendor that sells x/fire/forge/anvil/mana loom/etc.)

I've tried making one myself, but making a new database by hand is simply too much work to create (and update), and using yours, well, lets just say I have no idea what to do with all those numbers :D

Big fan, keep up the good work! in my considerable list of addons (home made and others), MobMap is definitely the number 1!

  33. Ken Keeton says:

Is there a way to change the quest text size? This feature was available before but I don't see it on the new version.

  34. TripleEYE says:

If you read up a bit mate - you'll notice a few of us have requested that very same feature ^_^
Currently there's no way to do that - and it seems to be the single function missing in this wonderful addon =)
