The MobMap Addon

The MobMap Addon is a universal ingame database browser, which will give you essential information during gameplay in order to greatly enhance your World of Warcraft gaming experience.

One of the core areas of MobMap is Questing - long before Blizzard integrated quest helping tools into the standard interface, MobMap users have been able to see the locations of their quest targets with just one click, as well as information about quest items. Today, MobMap complements in an ideal way the basic quest help functionality of the standard interface:

  • An advanced Quest Tracker helps keeping an overview over a lot of quests in your log. It displays the distance to each quest target and sorts your quests, so those with at least one target near you are always on top. One click is sufficient to view both MobMap's target positions as well as Blizzard's built-in quest information. The Tracker can be moved and resized to fit your needs, as well as deactivated entirely if you wish so.
  • MobMap can use the highly recommended addon "TomTom" to display a 3D navigation arrow which directly leads you to your quest targets!
  • MobMap users have written short Quest Comments for most quests in the game, in order to help other users with detailed explanations. Positions and NPC names in these comments can be displayed on the map with just one click - following a good hint was never easier!
  • MobMap can display all quests in the game in a big Quest List which can be filtered using a lot of parameters. Quests you have already completed are marked in this list. Rewards, quest targets, quest givers - everything is right at your fingertips no matter if you have a quest in your log or not.

But MobMap still has a lot more to offer - the Recipe Database for example, which holds the answers to questions like "What materials do I need to make this?". The merchant database lists all Merchants and their offers, and the Loot Lists tell you about the possible Loot from Instance Bosses.

How MobMap works

The addon holds its information in local databases which get loaded into the game right when they are needed. In order to simplify keeping those local databases updated, the MobMapUpdater tool was created - a small and lean Windows-based program which can either be run whenever you desire or kept running in the background. It is able to update both MobMap itself as well as the databases. And of course there's the possibility to manually download the newest database versions in the Download Area of this website, so you can extract them into your WoW Addon folder manually.

The dowloadable database version is usually updated multiple times per day. Each time, uploaded data from users all over the world is integrated into the database in order to fill "blind spots" and generally keep the database as complete and up-to-date as possible. Without this data from its users, MobMap would be of no use - and every single user is able to help! In its default configuration, MobMap is set to collect a lot of information about the game world you enjoy, like NPC positions, boss loot etc. This data collection process doesn't influence your gaming experience at all, and the data collected is entirely anonymous and only related to the content of the game. This information finds its way to the MobMap website and subsequently into the database by uploading it comfortably via the MobMapUpdater or manually by using the manual upload option on the MobMap download site.

Of course this is all optional - deactivating the data collection entirely is possible, and it won't harm MobMap's functionality if you do so. But without these user uploads, MobMap would just be an empty database browser - so if you find MobMap useful, please help keeping it that way by uploading data from time to time. It just takes one click and a few seconds with the MobMapUpdater!
